DIY Chalkboard

I’m pretty much in L-O-V-E with chalkboard paint. I’ve been slapping it on pretty much everything. I saw a really cute way to use it I never thought of before and thought I would try it out. It’s pretty much using a natural looking wood slice:

DIY Craft Chalkboard

This is a very (very) easy craft to make! All you need is a wood slice (these can be found at your local craft store in a variety of sizes) and some chalkboard paint. I chose the Martha Stewart Chalkboard paint in a pretty blue. I thought black might be too dark. It took a few coats (make sure to wait at least and hour between coats) and then let set for 24 hours to cure. I’ve seen a lot of tutorials to make your own chalkboard paint, so if there’s a particular color you love – that might be the best for you! I’m thinking about adding a hook from a picture hanging kit to the back and hanging it by our front door.

Or maybe if I’m feeling lazy I will just leave it leaning on the window! Either way it’s totally cute!

Desk Organization

I’ll be completely honest. Typically my half of the desk Casey and I share is a complete mess. Partially because we’re still figuring out how to use the space in our loft.

But over the past year I’ve been able to clean up my act (well, at least a little bit). Here are some of my favorite things to keep me organized.

target binders

I LOVE binders. I just can’t help it. Lately, Target has had some pretty amazing options to choose from (check out those polka dots and stripes). I like to put clear sleeves in mine to file away important documents, notes and receipts. You can find some like it here.

rifle paper coHow bad a is this notepad?! I mean come on. Skull and cross-bones with a “do or die” mentality. Now that’s what I call a to-do list. Thank your Rifle Paper Co.

mason jarNext, let’s talk about pens. And pencils and chalkboard markers because I know you are the kind of person who wants it all. Let me tell you, you can have it all dear friend. I like to put mine inย  mason jars because they come in a trillion sizes. Okay, like five – but still, there’s a mason jar for everything. Also, how depressing would your workspace be without a photo of your favorite person and a doodle from a BFF? All displayed adorably by this over sized chevron clothespin (I found mine for $1 at Michaels).

sticky notesFinally, I love having sticky notes in a variety of sizes. Working in PR, you find yourself flagging magazine articles a lot so I love having cute little ones in a variety of colors. I got the ones above as a gift and it’s great that they come in their own holder. Jonathan Adler has lots of other cute desk stuff, too.

Well I hope this helped you jump-start ideas for organizing your desk! BTW I’m having so much fun using the A Beautiful Mess photo app. If you haven’t downloaded it yet, you probably should.

Life’s Like This

I’ve been feeling pretty nostalgic lately. I think it’s just the time of year.

This time last year I was graduating, and let me tell all you young folks still in college, take your time. Enjoy it. Both Casey and I have talked about how much we miss SMU lately. It’s a very special place for us, too.

My mom and I spent some time flipping through old year books (from my private school plaid days) and it seems like forever ago. Then driving home from my run this gem came on:

I couldn’t help but think of how different my life is from when I was in middle school and high school. I think I’m really lucky though. Casey has been such a constant in my life for the past six years. My family is wonderful and so supportive. Although many of my friends have changed, there are many of them who are dear to my heart. (What’s the girl scout jingle we all learn? “Make new friends, but keep the old. Some are silver and the others gold.)

Also, some things will never change… Like our affinity for making silly faces.
